Martin Mainer in Mánes Gallery and Otto Placht in House of Lords of Kunštát

Two shows of great Czech painters following one after another in two biggest cities in the CR

Prof. Martin Mainer (1959) made a huge retrospective exhibition at Vltava's side two years before his 50. The show was titled "Blague looms blague, Calm looms calm". Say it five times and you're lucky. ;) Flyer, press release (Czech) Mainer installed there with helping hands of his close friends Alfred Symůnek, Martin Šťáva and Samuel Paučo a large scale of his painting work. And it's a breath-taking view! Martin Mainer was awarded with the prestigious Prize of Jindřich Chalupecký in time of its biggest importance and validity when masters like Kokolia or Skála received it too. He is one of the most important Czech artists of the "80s generation". Genius of light - Oh! :) The opening took place on June the 4th 2007 and as a music support performed in the base of Gallery two punk bands Uteč! (Run Away!) and Papírové panenky (Paper dolls), which Mainer's daughter Marie (17) figures in. In the second band together with Fábina Mertová (daughter of other Czech artists Margita Titlová and Vladimír Merta). Their music sound sometimes like old rock indie Dybbuk, of course more emo and more powerful, anyway as seventeen years old princesses from the capital they rocks for true! A sweet book was printed for this issue of Martin's show. 400 images. 900,- CZK on place but you can order it at Kosmas.cz for 720,- CZK (=approx. USD 34) only.

Day after this event in Mánes Gallery took place show opening of Mainer's lifetime friend and classmate: Otto Placht. It happened in Brno, in House of Lords of Kunštát. Placht is known for his travelling to jungle in Peru, where he found his wife and many other secrets of human inner and universe. His artworks are wilder than works by Mainer, although he makes an impression of quiet and restful person. He also creates paintings with UV-active colors. Also in Brno there was a dark saloon with three shining canvases. His paintings using natural pigments are wonderful as well as his energy, I mean because he made most of the shown art in last two years. Both exhibitions are those of most important art events of this year.

(fyi: "*ová" on the end of Czech surname means female) Only pictures shoted by my mobile available, coz until further upgrade of this article I'm working on sophisticating my more likely negative opinion to the shows. With following exceptions: 1) Heart of Věrka Kotlárová and 2) genuine opened and frank munchian "ejaculations" of Lojza Stratil (but sorry Lojza, I don't like the "concept" dicks by dicks photo of boys band next to the paintings). 3) No offence to Kolouch Olda. The important note: curator of this year symposium and professor Václav Stratil (on the photo with guitar) is living in the gallery Brno until the end of show.

ART & POUND 2006

29.7.- 9. 9. 2006 Kosmoukovský pond between Klenová and Týnec (Klatovy district)
curators: Andrea Štekrová, Marcel Fišer

The opening of water instalations show has taken place on the July the 29th on the Kosmoukovský pond between Klenová and Týnec. This project called Art&Pound is a part of the Artfest managed every summer by prestigious Czech Gallery Klatovy - Klenová. (not anymore in 2012) The impulse for instaling water objects came from Marcel Fišer (gallery director) and Andrea Štekrová (sculptor and graduate of Brno Faculty of Fine Arts). Participants were selected from sculpting studios all around Cyech and foreign academies, but finally mostly Czech artists were selected - Kateřina Braunová, Martin Janda, Jan Krtička, Libor Novotný, Richard Pešek, Michaela Petrů, Markéta Prášková, Markéta Varádiová and one Slovak participant - Štefan Papčo. Jan Krtička interpreted project of the poles embedded to the ground of the pond while their disappearing and follow-up emersion he demonstrated fluctuating of the water-depth. The sticks were set-in across the narrower part of the pond and they looked like remains of water buildings, or a gone houses in the dam reservoirs, which is possible to see when the level goes down. Markéta Varádiová put the question if a fish could want to know the people's world. She created the double-sided periscopes, which were placed by the waterside. The visitors had three options of view on the underwater world - through the clear glass, magnifying glass and color filter. The floating objects of Michaela Petrů named „Colors of the water“- colored table-tenis balls, bordered in the picture frame - mirrored a game of water surface colors not only because of colors but also with their interactivity. The restless water-table changed the position of the balls and by that also the color-spectrum of the picture. On the level of the water surface, slightly dipped, there were plastic water-lily blooms of Markéta Prášková situated. Like a glazed beauty, revealing only the obvious part of the water plant, inviting to the rootage inquiry. Under the water surface there was instaled the photoprint of Kateřina Braunová - a photography of the author leaning towards the water mirror. The spectator obtained an impression of the moment, which was held in the memory like the portrait of Narcis. Under the water surface there were also based the rescue circles of Martin Janda, which due to the immersion they made a worrisome impression impeaching their saving function, a vision of the drowning's future. Štefan Papčo, a student of VŠVU in Bratislava was inspired by a unique mountain-climbing experience in Ganku Gallery in the High Tatras. Three-dimensional drawing floating on the Kosmoukovský pond, consisted of the mountain-climbing signs evocated the direction and an approach of climbing the most dangerous tatranian wall. He decided to transfer his „map of experience“ to the different environment and by that feel its functionality in the new contexts. Libor Novotný presented the floating islands with letterings which offered the islands for sale, or with an icon of "exit", the arrow pointing to the ladder imbedded in the island (or the shortest way to Australia). The participants get from the common associations of the water element in their projects. The secret, which is possible to incite up to the tangibility with the dim water surface. The topics of the instalation often related to the symbols reflexions, mirroring, unconsciousness, “twinnity“, or introspection, sacred eeriness of Unknown. Then the Papčo's instalation evoked the difficultness of the inner journey, the circles of Martin Janda evoked the unreliability of the handholds, whereas the islands of Martin Janda or interactive instalation by Michaela Petrů brought wittiness and humour. The instalation approaches leaded to an interesting interaction with the buoying environment, which has no firm limits, allows arbitrary hide or show the objects and actively change them. The exhibition Art&Pound successfully used the options of water instalations. The only thing to reprehend to this project is a hugeness of the fishpond surface in a disproportion to the dimension and mostly the two-dimensionality of the exhibited objects which seemed to disappear (except the signs of Štěpán Papčo - visible from the castle Klenová ramparts) and also a little emphasis on the promotion in the pond close surroundings. The exhibition will continue in the following years and will retrieve a theme, whom i.e. Zorka Ságlová and others payed their attention. Instalation on the water surface could become a new opportunity of presentation not only for sculptors, but also for studios interested in spacial or generally environmental creation.

Opening of Radka Chocholoušková on the Kamenka

Brno, pub at the Kamenná colony, Brno, 4th Aug 2006

We visited Radka's opening because, Pavel introduced it with his text and also because I wanted to enjoy until the termination of my vacation. The paintings she made were beautiful, kind and dedicated to sea, marine, Atlantida, fish and sea-maidens while Radka self is a sea creature, well Pavel's sensitive introduction took all this into account. I was glad that I met there my bro Petr Šesták after months (or years?). A while ago his son was born and Petr named him as his beloved teachers - Václav Marian. I asked him how old is the son today but the answer "on autumn FIVE" was a real shock. After a moment also these new pictures will become a history and these young kids making funny ugly faces to us will be old inhabitants of Brno city. The cruel flow of time was transcended by a spontaneous jam we played various instruments and created huge music, a rythms interrfering with each other into one. Unfortunately this mass also as the paintings I did not shot, but Radka's artwork is visible e.g. on the Magda. I appreciated meeting together with my dear friends and I am happy that environment-artist R. appeared in my favourite medium, painting. Thanks for the rich table!

Great Gerhard in our small country!

(Brno, 10.2.2005) Believe it or not - when I heard last time a metaphor of Gerhard Richter as an equivalent of Kylie Minogue (=star) on the our scene, and I mentioned this metaphor in the latest report from Prague, I did not know, that just His exhibition has been preparing "a piece far from my house". In Brno House of Art takes place an exhibition of this contemporary painting giant who so often stands out of the main trends. Today this rich man teaches painting on one german academy and is the most appreciated living artist. That's a pity that you did not come personally, Gerhard!

The items are selected by the author, the curator is Jana Vránová. But those who came to see the younfg architects were bored soon and by director Horáček's back massively moved to the exposition.

I have heard some negative opinions of young artists to installation ("...hey dude, it is under a glass, just like Mona Lisa"). The reasons of secure adjusting are acceptable - and so rather under such glass than nothing. Unfortunately - no wine, no water, no snacks on the table...

There were exhibited also his photographs - except well known abstract paintings. Those black-and-white photos picturing details of color-mass (as a landscape) are really great! Gerhard Richter communicates between photography and painting in both directions. Btw. until this time it was possible to see his donation of a tens of canvases in Düsseldorf...

One of the main interesting principles closing to the Radikala line is art-brut, non-artistic art and amateur art. Click on the left photo and enjoy one of the newest cooperations in this field of authenticity. The right one leads to another interesting artistic presentation. Benedikt Tolar is neither amateur nor outsider artist but although he is Radical.

Radex is worrying into pieces Ex, the part of soc_magazine Reflex, where is Radikala mentioned

"Radex, sit down! What the hell do you do?! Oh damn, you chopped that Reflex where they were writing about us! " Radik is angry with dog, but actually he should be angry with visitors, who'd like to consume but who don't want to participate on the common work. It is not so fair with the doggie! Please don't hesitate and put here down your last intensive art experience please. "Radex, come on - place!!!"

Radikála as a spy on one controversial party of high society.

By one painting and through assistance of one beautiful girl Radikála was invited to join this special party called Hennessy Revolution Party 2005 which took place on the 1st Feb 2005 in Hegertova cihelna in Prague. This is a short report about background and run of this commercial propagation of hard spirit, which was the main purpose of it. The report is more similar to reality than fast made of "colleagues" from Czech shitboulvard Blesk (Flash).

Hennessy Revolution Party
Of course, the food was great.

Hennessy corporation, still be the biggest producer of fine french cognac during eight generations. This company announced a competition "Hennessy&Art". For a lot of you now started to blink a red allert, well let it be. But we would like to believe, that pure hold and maintenance for young artists provided by rich companies is a real good. Unfortunately in this case the hold was not so hot.. There got out a smudge on the thing during the competition process. It was all in the hands of proffessional PR agencies. The smudge inhered in the "re-selection" of other artworks after the regular competition finished. Who were the re-sellectors? Design Center of Czech Republic. Thereto it was nice meeting of TV stars, winners of Miss competition etc.

Hennessy Revolution Party
One of the finalists of Czech Pop Idol Petr Poláček. Is he interested in contemporary painting? (On the fig with comic Patrik Hezucký)

In fact anything wrong happened. Except this fact - paintings and sculptures which were said to be partaking a competition for some side-prize were only used as a decorative bush by the stage sides. While loading the driver did not know from which "company"! he is loading and what is he loading. He did not know any standard procedures related with artworks delivery. (He did have any rope, anything..)

Hennessy Revolution Party   Hennessy Revolution Party
"There was more African models than paintings and they were for everybody more interested too."

At about 10 pm was the winner known. These three girls are the finalists: Štěpánka Brodecká (VŠUP Prague), Andrea Kvasnicová (VŠVU Bratislava) a Jana Kochánková (Academy Prague). Who did mark out the winner? The party visitors! And the winner is: Andrea Kvasnicová from Slovakia. She obtained 20.000,- and a trip to Paris, many similar wins obtained also people who were boozing in premium bars and sending lots gotted by the long drinks, and also alloted visitors of this evening. A message: You can both booze expensive drinks and make art to merit the same reward! Another descent of fine arts.

Congratulations to Andrea - enjoy Paris! :-)

Speaker of the evening, threating cloud for all drivers, rowdy Leoš Mareš, was smart, cheeky and immediate. Such as behind the wheel such as always...

Leoš and paintings from Brno Arts Academy a little bit out in the cold.

Then ("after boring art") was singing and dancing Czech-Slovak star Dara Rolins. She said that one of the songs was specially for her written by Kylie Minogue. Great - it can hardly happen that Gerhard Richter would predraw a painting for one of us!

By the end: annual profit of Radikála is LESS than ZERO, annual sales of Hennessy company is a 2,7 billions French franks more...

Attention! Behindhand Hennessy company honoured all promises given to the authors and reclaimed all standard rules around artworks delivering a few days after publishing this article. Jitka Gottfriedová and her painting "Dracula" was awarded by 5.000 CZK prize. Congratulations! We believe that next time everything will be correct since the beginning. :-)

Holidays on South

I don't know where did you spend your days on holiday, dear friends, but watch a report from a few of actions in South Bohemia. Firstly let's look on the exhibition of southbohemian art schools (high schools) which took place in communistic House of Culture "Metropol" in České Budějovice (Budweiss). The best works came from Český Krumlov school (St. Anežka) There was also exhibited a diploma work from Educational Faculty of Southbohemian University. It gives a straight message: when you leave high school, leave the region too.

In Trebon, small town, was ArtFest (week of art actions, music, workshops, exhibitions, lectures) preparing. (Thanks to city grant, maecenaus Karel Babicek, Trebon development society etc.) Young people decided to manage in their home something, what they miss (and state instituitons don't make for them) In city theater were lectures of Dr. Petr Spielmann dr.h.c., prof. JUDr. Vladimír Franz, Jaroslav Róna M.A., Dr. Vít Soukup, in middleage houses in the center of town were exhibitions of: Veronika Bromová, Martin Mainer, Vladimír Franz, Ida Saudková, Vít Soukup, Jan Miko, Vladimír Hruška, Jirka Lukeš etc., and also a selection of more than 100 paintings made by people participating on workshops. Part - sponsored concert of Idiosyncratics (BE) and leading Czech drummer and percussist Pavel Fajt. Next year we recommend to make some smaller action, more familiar. In the same time on the next side of the square, another southbohemian painter - Petr Písařík and his works, paintings and objects. He lives in Prague, but is former citizen of Trebon. What does "Domá ni" (title of his exhibition) mean? Why are the chairs bondaged? (It's worse for sitting then.) If the sticks - red hearts, are there on the place of description in the author's eyes, what should disagreeing visitor do? Quo Vadis Pietro? Although strong exhibition, isn't it?

Coudenhove-Kalergi" . This mail-art exhibition will be held from November

 COUDENHOVE-KALERGI, Richard (1894-1972 )

Son of a Austro-Hungarian count and diplomat, and a Japanese.
After World War I, realizing the tragedy which was taking place in Europe,
Coudenhove-Kalergi set out a fight for the unity of Europe. His first
book -in fact a manifesto- titled Pan-Europa was published in 1923, and each
copy contained a membership form which invited the reader to become a member
of Pan-Europa movement. Thus, Coudenhove-Kalergi is the founder of the first
grassroots movement for the European unity. The movement held its first
Congress in Vienna in 1926. The following year Aristide Briand was elected
honorary president. Major personalities of European culture, as Einstein,
Thomas Mann, Freud, Rilke, Unamuno, Madariaga, Ortega y Gasset and Adenauer,
belonged to Pan- Europa
The French statesman Edouard Herriot writes in his book "The United States
of Europe":
"A large body among the leading spirits of Europe's youth devotes itself
today to the achievement of the lofty teachings of Kant. At the head of this
intellectual group it is only fair to put Count Richard N.
Coudenhove-Kalergi, the man who has certainly done most in recent years for
European federation".

Before the second opening we could listen to madrigal of Bohuslav Martinů by duo of virtuos violinists. Also exhibition of Tomáš Lampar, located in the first floor introduced Jiří Valoch. The author was looking shy but seriously.

Pánové hráli skvěle, vybuzená fantazie tlačila slzy do očí Stydlivě... ...ale přesvědčivě. Kompozice figurální...

And again the choirmaster Oldřich Hloušek and the choir Antea. Janáček suits them.

Sbormistr Hloušek má desky ...

Before the third opening we examined in Gallery of Jaroslav Král great Pánek. Something like in the historical museum, but at the end he made us.....ethnoparade.

Then it looks like lyric abstraction is everywhere.

Hot Destination/Marginal Destiny II : Cyril Blažo (Bratislava), Rafa Bujnowski (Wadowice), Tomáš Hlavina (Prague), Šejla Kameri (Sarajevo), Pavel Kopřiva (Kamenický Šenov), Little Warsaw (Budapest), Ján Mančuška (Prague), Pavel Mrkus (Toyama), Barbora Přidalová (Brno), Pavel Ryška (Brno).

By the way we saw the tombstone of Vaňkovka, legendary art building, which was killed for economical development...

Authentic punk exhibition in the underground Stone Colony in Brno was beautiful dot after the day. "Collection North" > Tichotová, Sedlaczek, Mandelíková, Rossová, Stratil, Vičanová.

Pavel Švec - Somebody just cannot make it

Sunday, Dec. 7, London - Turner Price for art was awarded to Grayson Perry, relatively unknown potter and transvestite. Enjoy 20.000 £ Claire !

On the November 9th Mario Merz died in his sleep in Milan.
May the living memory of him be honoured.

  Well, this is the beginning...

Petr Brožka - Kaprun, Pražák´s palace, Brno, EU

Heil SNBoarding, let´s make fun !

I have seen Petr Brožka´s exhibition Kaprun a few weeks ago.

He is a former student of doc. MgA. Petr Kvíčala at Faculty of Fine Arts in Brno and also my friend.

His acrylic paintings are picture of himself - good guy, who is fun with and who has been studying at Kvíčala´s studio.

But it must be said, that he and also P. Ryška are the most different artists who came through it.

The critical site of the coin could be the words of Zbyněk Linhart :

"It is no painting (for me). It is coloring."
